A few months ago, Quimey del Rio, DIA Senior Project Officer at The Trust for the Americas and actor and producer by profession, introduced to the Trust Team a new area to explore: the Orange Economy. This refers to the set of creative industries and activities that combine the creation, production, and marketing of creative content that is intangible and cultural in nature.1 This industry constitutes a significant economic force. Between Hollywood, Bollywood, and Nollywood, more than four thousand films are produced each year, thus generating commercial products that have significant cultural value.
Now, how does it align with our model as an organization? This industry benefits directly from Information and Communication Technologies (TICS). Also, they can generate many opportunities for SMEs since sophisticated technology is not required, nor is initial representative capital. Seen during the COVID-19 pandemic, we are also talking about a reasonably resilient sector. The creative industry\’s impacts on job creation, income generation, and contribution to GDP are quantifiable. These levels of prosperity align with cultural revolutions, a general embellishment, and human connectivity that accompanies creativity and free forms of expression.
The DIA Program advanced in an orange component shortly after through the Caribbean Regional Workshop \”Learn How to Produce a Professional Short Video from Scratch.\” This opportunity is generated with the support of Ignite Belize, an audiovisual creation company, and makes a call to Belizean, Jamaican, and Trinidad and Tobago\’s youth. During the workshop, participants will learn all the stages of video production and how to produce a video using their smartphones and a DSLR camera. From November 5 to December 10, 2022, young people between 16 and 30 interested in learning about video production can apply, before November 3, for this opportunity that only requires an eagerness to produce a video project with a team. With these new set of skills, participants from the DIA Labs will be able to showcase our success stories and raise awareness of the challenges our communities face throughout the region.
These products and services have the power to inspire and influence present and future generations. At The Trust for the Americas, we seek to contribute to a peaceful and just region where everyone finds the opportunity to succeed and prosper. Therefore, advancing in this industry will allow us to continue growing in creating vibrant and resilient communities.
Stay tuned. We\’ll keep moving forward.
