Boosting entrepreneurship in Puerto Rico through collaboration

It is clear that Puerto Rico’s business landscape is evolving rapidly. One of the reasons behind this growth is the ongoing work of organizations such as The Trust for the Americas and AES Puerto Rico. This year, we were pleased to celebrate the fourth edition of the ”Empowering Innovative Entrepreneurship” project. Once again, this project continues to make history by making a strong push into cities such as Guayama, Salinas, and Humacao—areas that are flourishing as hubs of innovation. Since 2018, more than 300 entrepreneurs have undergone a transformation. These numbers aren’t just figures in a report; they reflect stories of perseverance, innovation, and success. In 2023, we took another step forward by successfully training more than 90 entrepreneurs in areas crucial for excelling in today’s market. The recent Entrepreneurship Fair served as a platform that demonstrated the real impact of this project. Passionate entrepreneurs presented their ideas, competed with determination, and sought opportunities to expand their horizons. Beyond the training programs and events, the message is clear: there is a genuine commitment to the future of Puerto Rico and its entrepreneurs. Partnerships and collaboration across different sectors are steering the island toward a future characterized by innovation and economic development. The Trust for the Americas plays an essential role in connecting diverse sectors of society to drive development in the Americas. Our organization works alongside the private sector, the public sector, and the academic community to create opportunities for entrepreneurs and foster an environment conducive to business growth. Through the ”Empowering Innovative Entrepreneurship” project, The Trust for the Americas collaborates with AES Puerto Rico to provide training and technical assistance to entrepreneurs. The organization also partners with the Interamerican University, Guayama Campus, to offer educational and professional development opportunities. These partnerships are essential to the success of entrepreneurship in Puerto Rico. By working together, different sectors can leverage their strengths and resources to create a stronger entrepreneurial ecosystem. Entrepreneurship is a powerful force for economic and social change. In Puerto Rico, The Trust for the Americas is working to create a more prosperous future for the island through entrepreneurship and training.

Empowering Communities for Sustainable Development

To build a sustainable future, we need innovative and dedicated organizations that offer unique solutions. Since 1997, The Trust for the Americas, a nonprofit affiliated with the Organization of American States, has had a substantial impact in the Western Hemisphere. As the saying goes, actions speak louder than words. Our projects have benefited 4.3 million people across 27 countries, thanks to our network of 372 technology centers and innovation labs within the civic, academic, private, and public sectors. Some of our achievements include training 72,000 women in Mexico to acquire new skills, helping young entrepreneurs in the Caribbean expand their businesses, improving government transparency in Central America through open data, and supporting migrants across the continent in using technology to achieve their goals. Our success stems from our focus on social and economic inclusion through the use of technology, entrepreneurship, partnerships, and good governance. Our strong social franchise ensures brighter futures in communities by providing access to high-quality content and software, and by training individuals to think creatively in addressing pressing local challenges. Our projects are effective, engaging, and far-reaching, aligning with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) that are vital for social development and equal opportunities. As a member of this organization, I am proud to be part of such an innovative and unique team. We have achieved a lot; we are going for more!

Programming helps us understand a highly technological world.

COVID-19, technology, digital transformation, the new normal, code, etc. These are words we’ve all heard throughout 2020, and although we already knew they existed, we never imagined they would become part of our daily lives so quickly. Today, we don’t understand—or aren’t sure—how these new dynamics fit into our daily lives. So, as the world continues to adapt to a new normal, we must all find a way to evolve and fit into this new digital era. For the third consecutive year, and in collaboration with Code.org, we’re launching the global “Hour of Code” initiative. This program aims to introduce computer science to people who want to learn to code and understand the basic principles of this discipline. In the 2020 virtual edition, our local partners from the POETA Social Franchise and POETA DigiSpark, along with their participants, joined a fun and engaging session to learn about programming, computer science, and digital literacy. We are very pleased that, despite the challenges posed by the pandemic, over 100 people joined “Hour of Code.” This introduction to computer science will help them make sense of today’s world, understand how the technology we use works, and develop new skills that are vital for creativity and innovation—aspects that are critically important in the current situation we are facing. At The Trust for the Americas, we are always innovating and seeking disruptive ways to help our local partners and beneficiaries adapt more easily to this new post-COVID-19 world. This is how, through partnerships, we are increasingly ensuring that we create a better future with greater economic opportunities in Latin America and the Caribbean.
