En el marco del WOMEN ECONOMIC FORUM – único foro regional enfocado en la economía de la mujer, celebrado por primera vez en América Latina; The Trust for the Americas participará en un panel y un taller para la erradicación de la brecha de género presentando casos de éxitos de la implementación del Proyecto VIVE en México. Washington, D.C. (10 de julio de 2019) — The Trust for the Americas, tiene el honor de colaborar por primera vez en el WEF Latam- Women Economic Forum – que realizará su primera edición del 1 al 3 de agosto de 2019 en la ciudad de Cartagena, Colombia. Durante los tres días se llevarán a cabo conferencias con más de 137 ponentes, que incluyen a Martha Lucia Ramírez, Vicepresidente de la República de Colombia y Rigoberta Menchú, Premio Nobel de Paz. The Trust for the Americas aprovechará la plataforma del WEF para presentar un panel de alto nivel el viernes 2 de agosto a las 9:30 am en el Salón Bolívar 2 del Hotel Hilton Cartagena. En este espacio de colaboración explorará cómo los diferentes sectores de la sociedad pueden apoyar combinando desarrollo de habilidades, tecnología, innovación y finanzas para generar oportunidades económicas que ayudan a cerrar la brecha de género en Latinoamérica y el Caribe. El panel será moderado por Linda Eddleman; Directora Ejecutiva de The Trust for the Americas, participará Melissa Pino; Directora de Responsabilidad Social de Citi Latinoamérica, Martha Herrera; Directora Corporativa de Responsabilidad Social de Cemex y María Liliana Mor, Directora Ejecutiva de The Trust for the Americas. El sábado 03 de agosto, a partir de las 02:00 de la tarde en el salón Bolívar 2, María Fernanda Sierra, Gerente de Proyectos de The Trust for the Americas; Klaudia Gonzalez Martinez, Coordinadora Nacional del Proyecto VIVE en México y María Liliana Mor, Directora de Programas de The Trust for the Americas ofrecerán un taller interactivo basándose en el caso de éxito del Proyecto VIVE, The Trust for the Americas impartirá un taller interactivo donde los asistentes tendrán la oportunidad de conocer los retos y alcance del trabajo que se realiza en México para empoderar mujeres y cerrar círculos de prevención de violencia hacia las mujeres y niñas. Leer el Manual de Prevención de violencia. El Proyecto VIVE es implementado por The Trust for the Americas desde el 2016 gracias al apoyo de Walmart Foundation. El Proyecto tiene como objetivo ofrecer herramientas que permitan el desarrollo económico de las mujeres y darles alternativas que mejoren su condición social y la de su familia. Actualmente el Proyecto tiene sedes en 14 estados de la República Mexicana. Entre 2016 y 2018 capacitó a más de 51 mil personas a nivel nacional. Del total de personas capacitadas, más de 38 mil son mujeres (40% de las cuales son jefas de familia). Asimismo, cerca de 7 mil personas fueron vinculadas a oportunidades económicas (86% mujeres, 60% fueron vinculadas a un trabajo de tiempo completo y el 21% se auto-emplearon o iniciaron proyectos de emprendimiento). Klaudia González coordinadora del proyecto VIVE mencionó: “Desde que inició el proyecto, se han identificado factores que no permiten que la mujer supere los círculos de la violencia, por ejemplo, la dependencia económica. El perfil de las mujeres que acceden a nuestros programas es variado y representa un enorme compromiso para nosotras ya que el 40% de las mujeres son jefas de familia”. El Proyecto VIVE- Ven, Inspírate y Vende, hasta enero de 2019 es el proyecto de mayor alcance de The Trust for the Americas en el trabajo con mujeres de la región.  María Fernanda Sierra, Gerente de Proyecto VIVE, resaltó que “The Trust for the Americas busca impulsar el desarrollo de las mujeres que vivan alguna condición de vulnerabilidad, a través de la capacitación para brindarles herramientas de preparación para el trabajo y habilidades prácticas que les ayudarán a ser autosuficientes. Por ello, es de suma importancia afianzar relaciones colaborativas con sector público y privado para generar más derechos para más mujeres”. Alcaldes y Autoridades Locales se reúnen en la XXV Conferencia Regional de FIU y el Condado de Miami-Dade para debatir el futuro de la Agenda de Sostenibilidad Mundial. Miami, FL (19 de junio 2019). – The Trust for the Americas participa en la XXV Conferencia de Alcaldes y Autoridades Locales que se lleva a cabo del 18 al 20 de junio en la Ciudad de Miami auspiciada por Florida International University y el Condado de Miami Dade. Este año el tema de la Conferencia es “Construyendo las Comunidades del Mañana: Desarrollo Económico, Resiliencia y Sostenibilidad” y el orador principal del día de apertura será el presidente del Banco Interamericano de Desarrollo, Luis Alberto Moreno. Washington, D.C. (June 17, 2019) – The Trust for the Americas and the Organization of American States (OAS) have worked hand in hand in Belize with the government, civil society and the private sector, under grant funding from the Embassy of the United States of America in Belmopan, towards the strengthening of central and local governments in support of advancing democracy and governance efforts through civil society engagement. Over 18 months, the “Promoting an Open Government ecosystem in Belize” project was able to conduct capacity building training for Belizeans from various sectors through seminars, workshops and roundtable activities. This training stimulated the creation of small government/civil society coalitions for the development of 7 hackathon solutions and 8 innovative projects through the sub-grant’s incubator. Today, Belize has ongoing open government initiatives well underway. Additionally, the project accomplished the insertion of the country at the regional level by joining 7 other countries in the pursue of open government through the Development the Caribbean (DevCa) initiative; coordinated by the Caribbean Open Institute (COI) in Jamaica. DevCa takes place simultaneously in seven Caribbean countries as a leading platform for the discussion on how technology and data impact national development. Finally, as the advancement of democratic governance goes hand by hand with economic development, the project also focused on strengthening the dialogue about how the Belizean private sector could harness the economic value of Open Data. Through a series of activities, the Trust, the OAS and the Belize Chamber of Commerce and Industry (BCCI) collaborated to bridge Open Data and business opportunities by launching a dialogue to find answers as to ensure a collaborative approach to unlock the economic potential of Open Data in the country, most notably within Belize’s tourism sector. The opening of the event will be in charge of The Trust for the Americas CEO, Linda Eddleman and representatives of both the private and the public sector. Ciudad de México, mayo 2019.- Pro Mujer AC, institución enfocada a empoderar a las mujeres en América Latina, se sumó a The Trust for the Americas, institución sin fines de lucro afiliada a la Organización de los Estados Americanos (OEA), para capacitar a 2,400 mujeres mexicanas de 12 municipios en los estados de Hidalgo y Puebla, a través del Proyecto VIVE: “ven, inspírate y vende”. Esta alianza permitirá sumar los temas de ventas, promotoría y atención al cliente a la oferta educativa de Pro Mujer, enfocada en la educación financiera, destrezas en negocios, desarrollo humano y servicios de salud. María Fernanda Sierra, Gerente del Proyecto VIVE, explicó que esta colaboración es un avance porque “nos permite sumar esfuerzos para empoderar a las mujeres en México”. Además, explicó que el Proyecto VIVE se implementó en 2016 gracias al apoyo de Walmart Foundation, y durante estos años “hemos beneficiado a más de 52 mil personas, el 78 por ciento de ellas son mujeres que viven alguna condición de vulnerabilidad y que buscan ampliar sus habilidades técnicas y personales para mejorar su economía y su condición de vida.” De acuerdo con Carmen Correa, Directora Regional de Pro Mujer, “este esfuerzo impactará directamente en sus beneficiarias porque Pro Mujer es la única institución en México que combina las microfinanzas con la salud y el empoderamiento de las mujeres que viven en las zonas de mayor marginación y pobreza del país. Es importante resaltar que estas mujeres tienen poco o nulo acceso a servicios financieros, de salud y educación, así que les garantizaremos no solo un futuro mejor para ellas y sus familias, sino un desarrollo más sostenible a sus comunidades.”. Bogotá, D.C., (March 3, 2019) POETA YouthSpark is a Microsoft Philanthropy initiative that seeks to empower vulnerable youth in Latin America and the Caribbean through technology. The goal is to provide opportunities for education, entrepreneurship, and employment through comprehensive training in digital literacy and computer science. The launch of the POETA center and the POETA YouthSpark Project in Colombia will take place on Thursday, May 9, 2019, at the Asojuntas Hall in the Kennedy neighborhood of Silvania, Cundinamarca. Carrera 7A No. 10-17, one block above the Concha Acústica. The event, which will begin at 9:30 a.m. and end at 12:00 p.m., will feature the international participation of Pierina Nepote, Project Manager at The Trust for the Americas. Also in attendance will be representatives from Acción Cultural Popular (ACPO), representatives from The Trust for the Americas, members of the Sumapaz Women’s Circle, officials from the Municipal Mayor’s Office, and representatives from local educational institutions. All stakeholders involved in the event will participate in a roundtable discussion centered on the theme “Young Entrepreneurial Leaders,” with the aim of learning about and analyzing the productive initiatives in the municipality, as well as their visions, scope, and obstacles. Finally, young entrepreneurs from the departmental educational institutions of Santa Inés and Subía, the Salesian ITA Valsalice High School, the Women’s Circle, and other youth groups will present their productive initiative projects and showcase the results achieved so far to event attendees. The roundtable is part of a continued effort to gather government, private sector, and civil society leaders to create innovative solutions for the Belizean community. Washington, D.C. (April 26th, 2019)- The Trust for the Americas and the Belize Chamber of Commerce and Industry will host a roundtable to uphold a dialogue about the potential of open data as a source for improvement of public services and economic revenue. This event will take place as part of the project “Promoting an open Government Ecosystem in Belize” and is funded by the Embassy of the United States in Belize. The Trust for the Americas has been working closely with the Belizean private sector to support both the Belizean government and its civil society to jointly create spaces for dialogue, collaboration, and deliberation of policies to provide public access to information and effective service delivery. The roundtable will provide a forum for business development authorities, academics, and other groups interested in discussing how to co-create and innovate with the private sector and how to match the available Belizean open data with business opportunities. About the meeting, Rodrigo Iriani, project manager of The Trust for the Americas said “The goal is to showcase how open government and open data can advance transparency and development outcomes. More than 66.1% of Mexican women aged 15 and older have experienced violence (INEGI, 2016). * 16.4 million women in Mexico have no income of their own or derive their income from other sources. * In 2018, the VIVE Project trained more than 15,000 women, and more than 6,700 graduated from the “violence prevention program for girls and women.” Washington, D.C., March 7, 2019.- In observance of International Women’s Day, The Trust for the Americas, a nonprofit organization affiliated with the Organization of American States (OAS) and based in Washington, D.C., is launching, through its VIVE program in Mexico, the “Manual on the Prevention of Violence Against Girls and Women.” The manual is a guide designed to support women’s empowerment and is available on the Trust for the Americas website at www.thetrustfortheamericas.org. Regarding the manual’s launch, Klaudia González, coordinator of the VIVE program, commented: “Trust for the Americas, with support from the Walmart Foundation, launched the ”VIVE: Come, Be Inspired, and Sell“ project in 2016, with the goal of providing tools to foster women’s economic development and offer them alternatives to improve their social status and that of their families. Since we began the program, we have also identified certain factors that prevent women from breaking free from cycles of violence, such as economic dependence. With the goal of helping women identify these factors and learn how to overcome them, we are launching the Violence Prevention Manual today.” According to the independent evaluation (GENERA 2018), VIVE graduates have better employment prospects than their counterparts in the control group, as a large proportion of them have started a business, secured formal employment, or received a promotion following the training. In addition, VIVE graduates are more inclined to start their own businesses. More than 50% of the graduates in the group launched businesses after the training. More than 75% of the graduates also reported an increase in their ability to make decisions independently, with a difference of between 20% and 60% percentage points between the treatment group and the control group. Klaudia Gonzáles added that “in two years, more than 51,000 people have been trained, of whom more than 38,000 are women, and nearly 7,000 people were connected to economic opportunities (86% of whom are women). Of these opportunities, 35% were in the sales sector; 60% of the beneficiaries secured full-time jobs; and 21% became self-employed or started their own businesses. The profile of the women who participate in our programs is diverse and represents a significant commitment for us, as 40% of the women are heads of households.” The launch of the “Manual on the Prevention of Violence Against Girls and Women” aims to serve as a tool to support women’s development by promoting social and family well-being and providing the opportunity to continue working toward greater rights for more people. Bogotá, D.C. (February 28, 2019) — María Juliana Ruiz, First Lady of Colombia, visited the Mi Llave Laudes Infantis Center, located in Ciudad Bolívar, one of the most vulnerable neighborhoods in the Colombian capital. The visit was led by Linda Eddleman, Executive Director of The Trust for the Americas, and Jaqueline Moreno, Director of the Laudes Infantis Foundation, which has been a local partner of The Trust for the Americas for more than eight years.  Also accompanying the visit were Andrés Umaña, Director of Corporate Affairs at Microsoft Colombia, and Natalia Serrano, a representative of Microsoft Philanthropy. The Mi Llave Bella Flor Center was inaugurated in July 2011 thanks to a partnership between the Laudes Infantis Foundation and The Trust for the Americas, with the goal of promoting educational and economic opportunities, especially for young women and adult women living in the neighborhoods of Ciudad Bolívar, Usme, and San Cristóbal, south of Bogotá. Since 2011, the Mi Llave Center has impacted the lives of more than 14,477 young people and has generated more than 143 economic opportunities, 70% of which have gone to women between the ages of 16 and 35. Thanks to its intervention model based on the barter methodology, the Laudes Infantis Foundation has enabled the community to access community and educational services in exchange for non-monetary contributions, thereby improving the situation of women and their families.  Under this model, the services offered to community members are provided in exchange for personal efforts, such as a commitment to change a behavior or habit, attending counseling or mediation sessions, or participating in training that equips them with the tools to improve their circumstances. During the visit, the First Lady toured the Technology Center, spoke with the participants, and discussed identifying potential avenues for coordinated efforts that would continue to generate opportunities for collaboration to foster the development of skills, abilities, and talents, as well as the social and economic inclusion of young people in Colombia, through the national “Sacúdete” strategy, led by the Presidential Council for Youth—Colombia Joven.   For her part, Linda Eddleman, CEO of The Trust for the Americas, thanked María Juliana Ruiz and Microsoft for accepting the invitation and seeking avenues for joint collaboration to support the Colombian government’s initiatives, thereby creating more rights for more people.  She also thanked Jaqueline Moreno, Director of the Laudes Infantis Foundation, for becoming a partner of The Trust for the Americas and for working alongside the institution’s initiatives and its POETA Social Franchise model. San José (February 23, 2019). – The impact of migrant populations in the region has increased the need for governments to publicize available services and the best ways to access them. All governments that provide their citizens with the ability to access, use, and take ownership of government services through the use of ICT (information and communication technologies) make people’s lives easier by saving time on bureaucratic procedures. Migrant populations, often due to a lack of knowledge about the new rules and realities of the country to which they migrate, are unaware of these types of solutions and the technological advantages they can access. To address this reality, The Trust for the Americas, together with Hivos and La Red, organized a discussion forum to explore the importance of open government in advancing issues related to migrant and refugee populations in Costa Rica. The project is being implemented by La Red, a new collaborative initiative between civil society and the government, funded with seed funding administered by The Trust for the Americas. The goal of this project is to train 60 migrants during the first half of 2019 so that, based on the pillars of transparency, participation, and collaboration, they can access public services and complete general administrative procedures to facilitate their interactions with the public administration using open government tools. “The ultimate goal of this initiative is for Nicaraguan migrants currently living in the Pococí and San José areas to learn about the opportunities offered by open government to empower themselves and be able to replicate these efforts and generate a greater impact by making the public services they receive—or in which they themselves participate—more effective,” said Jorge Umaña, Coordinator of the Open Government Project for Trust for the Americas in Costa Rica. ‪Last September, Linda Eddleman, Executive Director of Trust for the Americas, presented Costa Rica’s First Vice President, Epsy Campbell, with a proposal to create a program to support the government in finding solutions to the critical situation facing migrants in the country. The project is aimed at Costa Rican communities affected by migratory pressure and will be implemented through a multidisciplinary program that has already been successfully tested based on experiences integrating demobilized and displaced populations in Colombia. In this regard, Linda Eddleman commented, “Trust for the Americas has more than 20 years of experience in integration programs for displaced populations and in promoting peace in the communities where they integrate.
