Mary Sofia Torres Mendez is an undergraduate senior working as a fellow at the Trust for the Americas in Washington, D.C. this summer, having been awarded the prestigious A. M. Ewing Public Service Fellowship for demonstrating distinction within the University of Oklahoma's Department of Political Science.
Passionate about providing social and economic opportunities to people in need through nonprofit work, she believes that education is a powerful tool that can be used to solve the world's problems. She is studying Public and Nonprofit Administration and International Development with the hope of becoming a force for change by encouraging sustainable social entrepreneurship. Having lived in Colombia her entire childhood, and witnessed first-hand the challenges that prevent many people in Latin America from realizing their potential, she aims to use the opportunities she has been given to continue striving for social inclusion and empower her community to work towards making the world a better place."
