May 17, 2024, Nariño, Colombia. May 16, 2024 – Like the Internet, artificial intelligence is a technology that influences and will continue to influence various aspects of the economy. For this reason, The Trust for the Americas (The Trust), Microsoft, and ParqueSoft Nariño are pleased to announce the opening of the first POETA Artificial Intelligence (AI) Center as a significant milestone in strengthening the technological infrastructure and promoting innovation in the Nariño region.  Recognizing the need to create environments conducive to technological advancement, The Trust has established POETA centers—innovative spaces in 22 countries, developed in collaboration with local organizations—where the community is trained in digital skills. With Microsoft’s support over the past two decades, The Trust for the Americas has expanded its network from a single center to nearly four hundred across the hemisphere. On this occasion, the POETA AI Center—dedicated exclusively to training in artificial intelligence—was inaugurated. The inauguration took place on Thursday, May 16, at the Center for Digital and Technological Entrepreneurship in Pasto. The event featured activities designed to foster interaction and learning around artificial intelligence. Among these activities, an interactive wall on artificial intelligence was set up, where participants shared their ideas and perspectives through a word cloud. In addition, screens displayed relevant data and a timeline illustrating the evolution of AI using augmented reality.  In her speech, Catalina Rengifo, Director of Philanthropy for Spanish-Speaking South America at Microsoft, commented: “At Microsoft, we firmly believe that technology is a bridge to a more inclusive and equitable future. April 22, 2024, Port of Spain, Trinidad and Tobago, April 8–12, 2024 – Rodrigo Iriani, DIA Senior Program Manager, and Quimey Del Rio, Senior Project Officer at The Trust for the Americas, embarked on a significant visit to the DIA Youth Innovation Lab in Trinidad and Tobago (DIA Lab TT) to strengthen ties with local partner Caribbean Industrial Research Institute (CARIRI) and donor Citi Foundation. The purpose of the visit was to explore innovation, engage with stakeholders, and strengthen collaboration in Trinidad and Tobago. The visit began with a productive meeting at CARIRI’s headquarters at the University of the West Indies in Saint Augustine. Rodrigo Iriani and Quimey Del Rio met with CARIRI’s distinguished leadership, including CEO Mr. Hans-Erich Schulz and Executive Managers Mr. Meghnath Gosein and Mrs. Denise Ferguson. Following this, the CARIRI team led an insightful tour of its research divisions—including Food & General Microbiology, Analytical Chemistry, Calibration & Maintenance Services, and Petroleum & Sustainable Energy Services—showcasing cutting-edge research and innovation available to DIA Lab TT beneficiaries.  To further their engagement, Rodrigo and Quimey were joined by Mrs. Marina Piper, the OAS representative for Trinidad and Tobago, to meet with DIA Lab beneficiaries at the Center for Entrepreneurship Development in Freeport. They explored the participants’ entrepreneurial journeys, witnessing firsthand the transformative impact of the Lab’s initiatives on their innovations. Additionally, a field visit to one of the DIA Pitch Tank Competition winners, Antonio Ramcharan, at his H2O Grow farm in Valencia provided valuable insights into innovative agricultural practices and sustainable food production methods.  Reflecting on the visit, Rodrigo Iriani emphasized, ’The passion and creativity demonstrated by DIA Lab beneficiaries reaffirm our commitment to nurturing young entrepreneurs and fostering a culture of innovation. We are grateful for the opportunity to connect with stakeholders and explore avenues for collaboration.“ In Trinidad and Tobago, they were invited to the ”Innovation Challenge Facility Awards,“ a grant funding event organized by the ”Shaping the Future of Innovation” initiative of the Ministry of Planning and Development, the European Union, IDB Lab, and CARIRI. This provided an opportunity to connect and network with various organizations and local stakeholders. CARIRI introduced the team to key players from both the public and private sectors. Finally, as part of the visit’s objectives, a meet-and-greet session was arranged with the Citi Foundation, bringing together representatives and five talented DIA Lab beneficiaries. This intimate gathering allowed Citi employees to engage directly with the young people they support and hear inspiring stories of innovation firsthand. DIA Lab beneficiaries shared stories of empowerment and community impact, demonstrating the Lab’s role in nurturing young talent. This visit served as a cornerstone in strengthening partnerships, fostering innovation, and empowering the vibrant youth of Trinidad and Tobago. In an exciting virtual event, the “Tech 4 TT: Building a Sustainable and Inclusive Future” Hackathon brought together young innovators from Trinidad and Tobago in an event organized by The Trust for the Americas‘ local partner, the Caribbean Industrial Research Institute (CARIRI), and focused on challenging participants from the DIA Youth Innovation Lab in Trinidad and Tobago (DIA Lab TT) to develop innovative tech-based solutions.  Over the course of 48 hours, 14 teams—comprising developers, subject matter experts, and idea generators—tackled the challenge of creating ICT solutions across five themes: Community Challenges, the Future of Work, Gender Equality, Sustainable Innovation, and Youth Empowerment. Each team aimed to secure $1,000 in seed funding, so they presented their projects with passion, creativity, and an unwavering commitment to a multidisciplinary panel of judges, including Kern Elliot, Team Lead of Software Development at iGovTT; Joel Joseph, who has two decades of expertise in social and market research; and Golda Lushington, who has fourteen years of experience in Information and Communication Technology and Innovation.  The winners presented solutions poised to uplift communities through technology-based approaches: These winning projects exemplify the spirit of innovation and collaboration fostered by the “Tech 4 TT: Building a Sustainable and Inclusive Future” Hackathon 2024. March 21, 2024 Mexico City, March 20, 2024.—The Trust for the Americas presented the results of the CIMA Project (Comprehensive Training for Women in Action), which, in its first two years, trained more than 430 women, with more than 200 securing economic opportunities in the form of jobs, entrepreneurial ventures, and internships. As part of this event, a roundtable discussion titled “The Power of Partnerships: Ensuring Dignified Opportunities for Women” was held, featuring Fernanda Domínguez, Inclusive Society Coordinator at the Mexican Institute for Competitiveness (IMCO); Sandra Cruz, Human Resources Coordinator at “La Casa de los Abuelos,“ Elizabeth Huaracha Haro, a CIMA Project participant, and Lourdes Serrano, CIMA Project Manager, discussed how collaboration among various key stakeholders maximizes the impact of economic inclusion projects for young women in Mexico. The goal of the discussion was to highlight the reasons why it is necessary to build strong strategic partnerships and support an increasing number of women in becoming financially independent, thereby improving their overall well-being. Today, women represent 55% of the workforce in Mexico’s hospitality industry, which is why The Trust for the Americas saw an opportunity to launch the CIMA Project and, in doing so, train and empower young women to access decent jobs in this industry with equal opportunities and fair wages. The hospitality industry is a growing sector in Mexico and is expected to grow at an annual rate of 4% in the coming years. There will be more employment opportunities for women in this industry, making it timely to offer training opportunities such as the CIMA Project, which includes relevant topics such as an Introduction to the Hospitality and Tourism Sector, Customer Service and Care, Communication, and Personal Image. Likewise, the importance of creating synergies with the private sector of the industry was highlighted, since, through local implementing partners such as Jóvenes Constructores de la Comunidad (JCC) and Centro Laboral México IAP, some of the CIMA graduates have already found employment in restaurants, hotels, or cafes in Mexico City. Pierina Nepote, Senior Manager of the POETA Program at The Trust for the Americas, noted that “Project CIMA seeks to empower young women in Mexico City through a comprehensive intervention that includes more than 100 hours of training in technical, digital, life skills, and empowerment; personalized support and care services; and stipends that recognize the participants” time and needs.“ It is worth noting that the CIMA Project by The Trust for the Americas contributes to the Sustainable Development Goals, including poverty reduction, quality education, gender equality, decent work and economic growth, and reduced inequalities. Kingston, Jamaica – March 17, 2024 – The Trust for the Americas, through its Democratizing Innovation in the Americas Program (DIA), proudly celebrates the monumental achievement of Cohort 2’s graduation from the JET Project, marking a remarkable milestone in the project’s journey to empower Jamaican youth for the digital economy.  The rapid expansion of the digital technology landscape poses challenges for young people disproportionately affected by the mismatch between their digital skills and those in demand by the labor market. Therefore, the JET Project prioritizes employability and upskilling strategies to build a resilient labor market. Building upon the success of the inaugural cohort, the JET Project has witnessed an extraordinary increase in graduates, with 118 young Jamaicans ready to shape the future of the labor market.   At her address, Linda Eddleman, CEO of The Trust for the Americas, expressed her elation at the exponential growth of the JET Project, stating, “The achievements of our JET Project graduates are a beacon of potential and resilience. Port of Spain, Trinidad and Tobago, February 28, 2024. In June 2021, representatives from The Trust for the Americas, the Caribbean Industrial Research Institute (CARIRI), and the Citi Foundation opened the DIA Youth Innovation Lab in Trinidad and Tobago (DIA Lab TT) with one specific mission: to sow the seeds of innovation and opportunity in the hearts of young entrepreneurs and cultivate a generation of disruptors, innovators, and changemakers, armed with nothing but their ideas and a burning passion to make a difference. Fast forward to today, the DIA Lab TT has evolved into more than just a hub for technological training, mentorship, and access to advanced, state-of-the-art equipment. It’s a catalyst for young entrepreneurs to bring their ideas to life, supported by seed funding provided by the Pitch Tank Competitions. This transformation was evident on February 28, as nine promising individuals, selected for their creativity and determination, gathered at CARIRI’s Centre for Enterprise Development. There, amidst palpable excitement, they presented their innovative business concepts to a panel of esteemed judges. The diverse range of ventures, from eco-friendly skincare to cutting-edge agricultural technology, captivated the audience and impressed the judges. Following a thorough evaluation, six exceptional entrepreneurs emerged victorious, securing a total of USD 6,250 in seed funding: But the Pitch Tank Competition wasn’t just about the winners; it celebrated innovation and determination. All participants seized the opportunity to showcase their ideas, network with industry leaders, and gain invaluable feedback and mentorship. Ciudad de México (15 de febrero de 2024) – Dada la importancia que gana cada vez más la tecnología en el mercado laboral mexicano y, en general, en todos los aspectos de la vida, tres gigantes se han unido en una alianza estratégica que promete contribuir positivamente al panorama laboral en América Latina. Desde 2023, The Trust for the Americas, Microsoft y EY han forjado esta colaboración, con el objetivo de reducir la desigualdad laboral mediante la implementación del Proyecto POETA DigiSpark en varios países de la región, incluyendo Argentina, Brasil, Chile, Colombia, México, Perú, Puerto Rico y Uruguay. También se llevará a cabo un panel sobre Inteligencia Artificial, junto con expertos de ambas compañías. Se espera la participación de 30 personas, en su mayoría mujeres (60 %), mayores de 20 años, de nivel socioeconómico medio y medio bajo, para brindarles herramientas valiosas y compartir historias de éxito que las inspirará para impactar su vida laboral y personal. February 13, 2024, Bogotá, Colombia. – February 13, 2024 – Given the ever-increasing importance of technology in education, the workplace, and, in general, all aspects of life, three industry giants have joined forces in a strategic alliance that promises to make a positive contribution to the job market in Latin America. Since 2023, The Trust for the Americas, Microsoft, and EY have forged this collaboration with the goal of reducing labor inequality and the education gap through the implementation of the POETA DigiSpark Project in several countries across the region, including Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Mexico, Peru, Puerto Rico, and Uruguay. In response to the digital skills gap, EY has created the Future Skills Workshops, a series of 90-minute workshops focused on developing future-ready skills—skills that aren’t always taught in schools but undoubtedly facilitate entry into the job market. The workshops aim to inspire students to explore topics such as emerging technologies, environmental sustainability, civic literacy, and financial education, among others, while discovering new passions and potential careers and developing the mindset and skills needed to enhance their employability in a changing workforce. As part of its Corporate Social Responsibility program, EY volunteers will lead a “Digital Literacy” workshop for a group of 40 tenth- and eleventh-grade students at the José María Vargas Vila High School, as well as a panel discussion on Artificial Intelligence, alongside experts from Microsoft. The Laudes Infantis Foundation, a key partner of The Trust for the Americas in the country, was responsible for identifying the program participants based on their high potential and the institution’s needs. Verónica Philippe, POETA DigiSpark Project Manager, shared that “It is a pleasure and an honor to be part of this partnership that is transforming the educational and employment landscape in Latin America. As Project Manager for this ambitious initiative, I believe in the power of technology education to empower adolescents, young people, and adults toward quality educational and labor market inclusion. January 31, 2024, Baní, Dominican Republic – January 26, 2024. The Trust for the Americas seeks to foster a collaborative ecosystem that encompasses the various sectors of society. Through this regional synergy, it carries out projects that have a positive impact on the lives of people in the Americas, and the DIA Innovation Lab in the Dominican Republic is a clear example of this. In collaboration with our local partner, ADASEC RD, and with financial support from the Citi Foundation, the DIA Lab RD seeks to stimulate innovation and the creation of disruptive solutions among Dominican youth.  Since its inception in 2022, this project has positively impacted the lives of more than 500 young people in the towns of Baní, Bonao, and La Vega by providing access to technology and collaborative spaces, training, and competitive seed funding. This seed capital is awarded through the Innovative Projects Pitch Competition, the most recent of which was held on January 26, 2023.  A multidisciplinary jury reviewed 13 projects, evaluating key criteria such as the business model, social and environmental impact, economic viability, and degree of innovation. The most outstanding projects were awarded USD 1,000 in seed funding to strengthen their structures and amplify their impact. Nine outstanding winners were selected from among the projects submitted: Allen Feliz, Coordinator of the DIA Lab RD Project at ADASEC, noted: “At DIA Lab RD, we not only provide exceptional training but also offer seed capital to young people, guiding them toward a successful future.”   These projects exemplify the commitment of the Democratizing Innovation in the Americas (DIA) Program, part of The Trust for the Americas, to promote innovative and sustainable initiatives, giving Dominican youth the tools they need to develop business ideas or launch social projects that positively impact their lives and their communities. January 15, 2024, Panama City, Panama. December 2023. On December 15, 2023, a closing ceremony was held to mark the completion of the implementation of the Inter-American Open Data Program to Prevent and Combat Corruption (PIDA) in Panama, a project implemented by The Trust for the Americas through its Democratizing Innovation in the Americas (DIA) Program.   The initiative, launched in 2022 in strategic partnership with the Development Bank of Latin America and the Caribbean (CAF), the National Authority for Transparency and Access to Information (ANTAI), and the National Authority for Government Innovation (AIG), aimed to support the Panamanian government and civil society in the collaborative process of implementing PIDA and in developing actions that contribute to combating corruption through the use of open data.   Among the notable achievements of this phase is: Representatives from various sectors participated in the closing event. Jorge Umaña, Project Coordinator at The Trust for the Americas, noted: “This project aims to drive and improve actions and initiatives in the fight against corruption and to promote an ecosystem that facilitates access to and use of open data in the country.”  Likewise, Elsa Fernández, Director General of ANTAI, stated: “The impact on technical capabilities—both among citizens and within the government sector—was definitely widespread. More than 31 entities were involved in anti-corruption efforts, of which 17 are now committed to the ongoing publication of 30 related datasets, which are key to the fight against corruption.”  The Inter-American Open Data Program to Prevent and Combat Corruption (PIDA) in Panama focuses on implementing various actions, such as training, awareness-raising, project execution, and the incubation of citizen empowerment projects. These initiatives seek to establish new and effective channels in the fight against corruption through the use of open data.
