[Washington DC, October 30, 2023] – The Trust for the Americas is excited to announce two significant developments in its ongoing mission to empower vulnerable and low-income populations in the border region between Mexico and the United States. 20 beneficiaries from the El Paso, Texas metro region have successfully completed their training and 40 beneficiaries from the Ciudad Juarez, Chihuahua metro region, will graduate on November 14th, marking the completion of the first cohort under the transformative Skills for Sustainability (S4S) Project. This project is supported by a consortium of multilateral institutions, local educational institutions, and private sector partners in the El Paso-Juarez metropolitan region, San Antonio, and Washington, DC, and is performing a pivotal role in enhancing economic development through technology. The Trust for the Americas, in collaboration with financial support from the North American Development Bank (NADBank), Microsoft, and other private sector companies, including Water House Group, was pleased to launch the “Skills for Sustainability (S4S)- Jale por el Agua project” in March 2023. This initiative benefits from the partnership with Jóvenes Constructores de la Comunidad in Ciudad Juarez, Chihuahua, Mexico and Success Through Technology Education Foundation (STTE) and Wester Tech, in El Paso, Texas, in the United States, which serve as implementing partners in both regions. The Skills for Sustainability (S4S) Project receives steadfast support from the Municipal Board of Water and Sanitation of Juarez, El Paso Water, Veolia, Water House Group, the National Chamber of Commerce of Juarez, and the El Paso Chamber of Commerce. These organizations, among others, share a deep commitment to providing technical skills development and promoting employment opportunities in the US-Mexico border region. Skills for Sustainability (S4S) – Jale por el Agua is a binational project focusing on digital, life, and technical skills training while providing essential support for employment integration of vulnerable and low-income populations. The program is specially designed to prepare participants for positions in the water and wastewater management sector along the Mexico-United States border. Port of Spain, Trinidad and Tobago – October 20, 2023. The Trust for the Americas, in collaboration with the Caribbean Industrial Research Institute (CARIRI) and the generous support of the Citi Foundation, celebrated the in-person graduation of 297 individuals from the DIA Youth Innovation Lab at Trinidad and Tobago. These young innovators now stand ready to harness their transformative potential and lead the charge in developing solutions that promise to usher new livelihood opportunities and foster economic development in their communities.  The DIA Youth Innovation Lab in Trinidad and Tobago (DIA Lab TT) was launched in June 2021. This initiative was established with a clear mission – to ignite innovation and nurture disruptive solutions among at-risk youth within Trinidad and Tobago. DIA Lab TT accomplishes this by providing access to cutting-edge technology training, collaborative workspaces, specialized curricula, invaluable mentorship, and essential seed funding grants.  At the event, Quimey del Rio, DIA Senior Project Officer at The Trust for the Americas, remarked, “We’re here to celebrate the vision of fostering innovation, entrepreneurship, and youth development. Caribbean youth are tackling local challenges through technology, training, and collaboration. Today, almost 300 talented individuals graduated with skills to excel in competitive industries. Our DIA Labs provide a safe space for young entrepreneurs. We thank CARIRI and the Citi Foundation, but most importantly, we appreciate the trust of our youth and their communities.”  The Honourable Foster Cummings, Minister of Youth Development and National Service, also present at the event, expressed: “The Government of Trinidad and Tobago is committed to the development of young people, and we have decided to pay attention to the areas of entrepreneurship and innovation. We have become a society that requires innovators, and when we see people heading in that direction, we want to support that, and this lab here at CARIRI has that.”  At her address, Desirai Johnson Phillip, a distinguished DIA Lab TT graduate from cohort 15, shared, “Being a part of this program has shown us how to rebrand, revamp, and create the next steps. We’ve learned not only the ABCs of startups but also that it’s okay to fail. We’ve learned to think outside the box and see opportunities where others won’t. We are the ones who dare to dream and chase it with everything we’ve got.”  Graduating these 297 exceptional individuals is just the beginning of a transformative journey. They now stand at the forefront, ready to soar in the digital economy, armed with innovative ideas and a relentless spirit. Kyoto, Japan. October 8, 2023. – Rodrigo Iriani, Senior Program Manager at The Trust for the Americas, was a distinguished participant at the 18th annual United Nations Internet Governance Forum (IGF) held in Kyoto, Japan, from October 8 to 12, 2023. Hosted by the Government of Japan, this year’s IGF revolved around the theme, “The Internet We Want – Empowering All People.” Rodrigo’s presence at the event highlighted the remarkable work of The Trust for the Americas as a pivotal case study developed by Cepei and LIRNEasia. The panel named “Public-Private Data Partnerships in the Global South” presented challenges, opportunities and impact when private sector, governments and civil society attempt to form data partnerships.  LIRNEasia, an organization dedicated to catalyzing policy change and solutions through research in the Asia-Pacific region, invited Rodrigo to share insights into the transformative power of public-private data partnerships in achieving Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in the Caribbean region. These partnerships are instrumental in enhancing the capabilities of stakeholders involved in SDG implementation, particularly in regions where progress has been slower.  For several years, Cepei has collaborated with LIRNEasia. As a data-driven think tank, Cepei has been at the forefront of fostering multi-stakeholder dialogue, generating evidence for decision-making, and expanding the production and use of open data across sectors and regions. Specializing in Latin America and the Caribbean while working in the Global South, Cepei has made significant strides in empowering individuals and institutions to discover pathways toward sustainable development through data and analysis.     In 2021, both entities embarked on the SDG Acceleration Roadmap project. This initiative, supported by the International Development Research Centre (IDRC), explores the private sector’s role in shaping public policy through data-related contributions in the Global South. Together, they have made notable progress, successfully documenting 394 data actions across 94 countries.  For several years, Cepei,  has collaborated with LIRNEasia. In 2021, both entities embarked on the SDG Acceleration Roadmap project, backed by the International Development Research Centre (IDRC) to investigate the private sector’s role in shaping public policy through data-related contributions in the Global South. So far, this initiative has successfully documented 394 data actions across 94 countries.   Moreover, this year, they released an insightful paper featuring eight cases showcasing progress in public-private data partnerships for SDGs in the Global South. Among the eight case studies, The Trust for the Americas stood out for its role in the Caribbean. As an affiliated non-profit to the Organization of American States (OAS), The Trust has been instrumental in promoting public and private sector collaborations in the Americas. Its strong private sector orientation and affiliation with OAS make it a valuable convener for development initiatives.   In light of the COVID-19 pandemic, The Trust’s emphasis on capacity building in the Caribbean, particularly in digital skills, aligns seamlessly with SDGs related to education, employability, and community development. Research involving The Trust and partners in Jamaica, Trinidad and Tobago, and Belize has yielded fundamental insights and recommendations for future regional public-private data initiatives.  As the region continues to address digital skill deficits, the study encourages private sector actors to contribute beyond capacity-building by incorporating value-added interventions into their efforts. República Dominicana. – Santo Domingo se convirtió en el epicentro de un evento trascendental que congregó a jóvenes, representantes gubernamentales, emprendedores y expertos locales e internacionales. Los días 27 y 28 de septiembre de 2023, tuvo lugar el DIA Summit 2023, organizado por The Trust for the Americas en colaboración con ADASEC República Dominicana y con el respaldo financiero de la Fundación Citi. El objetivo de este evento fue crear un espacio de colaboración e innovación centrado en tres áreas cruciales: cambio climático y sostenibilidad, emprendimiento, y tecnología e innovación.  A lo largo de estos dos días, más de 22 destacados ponentes de diversos países se presentaron ante una audiencia compuesta por más de 150 personas. El DIA Summit 2023 ofreció una diversidad de formatos, que incluyeron desde conferencias magistrales hasta paneles de discusión, todos ellos abordando temas de vital importancia para las Américas.  En sus palabras inaugurales, Alexander Figueroa, COO de The Trust for the Americas, subrayó la importancia del desarrollo tecnológico en el Caribe, al afirmar: “La innovación es esencial para alcanzar el desarrollo sostenible, la prosperidad económica y la resiliencia ante múltiples desafíos. Santo Domingo – 29 de septiembre de 2023. En un evento presencial, Citi Foundation, The Trust for the Americas y ADASEC Dominicana celebraron el lanzamiento oficial del cuarto Laboratorio de Innovación DIA en República Dominicana (DIA Lab RD), un espacio de colaboración que brindará a más jóvenes de la comunidad de Bonao el acceso a tecnología y capacitación en habilidades digitales, de negocios y laborales, para contribuir a la empleabilidad y a la generación de oportunidades de sustento.  Este laboratorio es una iniciativa diseñada por la organización The Trust for the Americas de la Organización de Estados Americanos (OEA), a través del Programa Democratizando la Innovación en las Américas (DIA), e implementada gracias al apoyo económico de Citi Foundation. El nuevo laboratorio en Bonao es el sexto que nace de esta alianza, luego de una exitosa implementación en Jamaica (2016), Trinidad Tobago (2021) y en las comunidades de Baní, Bonao y La Vega en República Dominicana (2022).  En el evento, Rodrigo Iriani, Gerente Senior del Programa DIA, se dirigió a los jóvenes de la comunidad: “Quiero agradecerles a ustedes por acompañarnos el día de hoy e invitarlos a ser parte de esta iniciativa. Cidade do México, 29 de setembro. — O Centro Jovens Construtores da Comunidade, parceiro local no México e responsável pela implementação do Projeto CIMA (Capacitação Integral de Mulheres em Ação), realizou a cerimônia de entrega de reconhecimentos a 44 mulheres formadas. O evento contou com a presença do embaixador Aníbal Quiñónez, representante da Organização dos Estados Americanos (OEA) no México, e de Lara Bersano Calot, diretora de Comunicação e Transformação Digital da The Trust for the Americas, como madrinha desta primeira turma. José Ramón Garrido Susacasa, diretor executivo nacional da Jóvenes Constructores de la Comunidad, mencionou que “vivemos tempos difíceis, e somente com o compromisso de pessoas como esta equipe (JCC e CIMA) podemos alcançar essa mudança”. Além disso, ele afirmou que isso se deve às organizações que confiam neles, como a The Trust for the Americas e a OEA, para implementar projetos que lhes permitem beneficiar as populações por meio da capacitação em habilidades para a vida e habilidades profissionais. O Projeto CIMA foi desenvolvido com o objetivo de melhorar a autonomia financeira e o bem-estar geral das mulheres no país, por meio de capacitações em habilidades técnicas, digitais e para a vida, esse objetivo ficou refletido no depoimento de Jazmin García, uma jovem de 20 anos que nos contou que, graças a essas habilidades, “agora sou uma pessoa nova, em busca de novos caminhos para me tornar uma pessoa melhor”. Em sua participação, Lara Bersano Calot reconheceu a coragem das jovens formadas, pois “apesar dos desafios, elas estão aguardando um documento que reconheça seu esforço. Porque, apesar dos medos e da incerteza, decidiram aceitar esses treinamentos que as ajudarão a abrir outras portas. Isso é apenas o primeiro passo, significa o início de uma jornada. Além disso, quero lembrá-las de que não estão sozinhas, que há muitas pessoas pensando em vocês, pensando em cada uma individualmente, e isso tem que ser importante para vocês”. Além disso, ela convidou a turma a se tornar multiplicadora do projeto, pois, por meio de suas experiências, elas poderão convidar outras pessoas a adquirir essas habilidades que as ajudarão a obter melhores oportunidades econômicas. O embaixador Aníbal Quiñonez, representante da OEA no México, destacou que as beneficiárias agora contam com alicerces para “construir sua casa” — como metáfora — rumo à nova busca por oportunidades que lhes permitam melhorar sua qualidade de vida. “Sei que vocês não estão recebendo um mundo perfeito, mas a obrigação de vocês será construir um mundo que seja um lugar melhor para se viver. Aqui vocês receberam os alicerces do que vão construir. Convido-os a continuarem se capacitando e a lembrarem que, se eu quiser, eu posso e chegarei aonde eu quiser”. A cerimônia de formatura contou com mensagens emocionantes de beneficiários de outros projetos implementados no JCC, pois, graças à tecnologia, foi possível reunir, virtualmente, pessoas de diferentes centros na Cidade do México, no Estado do México e em Tijuana. O Projeto CIMA é implementado no México pela The Trust for the Americas, em parceria com a SERAJ (Serviços para a Juventude) e a JCC (Jovens Construtores da Comunidade), com financiamento da Fundação Conrad N. Desde 2022, o CIMA busca aumentar o bem-estar geral e a autonomia financeira de jovens mulheres entre 16 e 29 anos por meio de treinamentos e mentorias presenciais e/ou virtuais com foco em habilidades técnicas, de vida, digitais e de empoderamento. Dessa forma, a CIMA apoia a inserção das participantes do projeto no mercado de trabalho no setor de hospitalidade na Cidade do México. Bajo el lema “Inteligencia Artificial para Todos: Desbloqueando la Tecnología y el Conocimiento”, este evento reunirá a expertos y entusiastas de la tecnología para explorar el impacto y el potencial de la Inteligencia Artificial (IA) en el empoderamiento de docentes, empleados y emprendedores a través de un uso productivo y ético.  Durante cuatro días, los participantes tendrán la oportunidad de adentrarse en el fascinante mundo de la Inteligencia Artificial, desde su aplicación en entornos educativos hasta su influencia en la accesibilidad y representatividad. Kingston, Jamaica – September 17, 2023 – The Trust for the Americas, through its Democratizing Innovation in the Americas (DIA) Program, celebrated the in-person graduation of the pioneering JET Project cohort, “Pixels of Possibility.” Fourteen young Jamaicans can now make way for themselves in the labour force after acquiring digital and life skills through the Unleashing the Potential of Jamaican Youth Through Empowerment and Training (JET). This event is a resounding testament to the project’s dedication to bridging the digital divide in the face of the digital economy.  The JET Project aims to equip young Jamaicans with essential skills while supporting their transition into the digital workforce, freelancing, or entrepreneurial ventures. As of 2022, youth unemployment rates in Jamaica had surged to six times their pre-pandemic levels*. Notably, the JET Project used the results of a labour market study generated by Citibeat’s artificial intelligence platform. Web programming and app development emerged as top digital skills in demand. The training modules challenged students to think differently about engaging with technology.     At the event, Milton Drucker, Special Advisor at The Trust for the Americas, said: “… this project is an example of what can happen when we harness private and public sector resources and the goodwill of community leaders. The Trust has a mission to give people who otherwise cannot participate in the digital world a fair chance. Moreover, through the DIA Program, we aim to give youth the tools to innovate, use their native creativity, and develop their own independent businesses.”  Likewise, Sudaney Blair, Operations Associate at the IDB, expressed: “There is a disconnect between some of the opportunities available in the global market and what our young people can access. And so, in discussion with The Trust for the Americas, in terms of understanding the needs of and helping to move our young people to a stage they would have had access to (opportunities), we were very excited (to be involved). I charge you today to take advantage of the opportunities… You do not necessarily have to travel to make an impact, so make the impact.”  Finally, in her valedictory address, Bianca Powell, a JET Project graduate, shared: “I saw the JET Project as an opportunity to gain more digital skills. Having the confidence to use the tools and to use them effectively has been life changing. I just started using Canva (a graphic design platform) within the past three months, and I’ve gone from being unable to use it to building a website – that’s crazy to me! We also built an app, and never in my life did I imagine that I’d be able to do that.”    The JET Project’s inaugural graduation marks the beginning of a transformative journey for these 14 young Jamaicans, who have become “Pixels of Possibility” and are now poised to soar in the digital economy. This milestone underscores the commitment of all partners involved to empower Jamaican youth and build a more resilient labour market for the future.  There has been a major increase in expressions of interest for the second intake of students. Mendoza, Argentina. Martes 9 de mayo de 2023. Como parte de las alianzas que desarrolla The Trust for the Americas para ampliar la red de centros de capacitación en habilidades digitales en Argentina, se inauguró hoy un nuevo centro del programa POETA en Lujan de Cuyo, Mendoza. Este centro se formó gracias al aporte de la empresa Klimber Latam, y beneficiará a varias comunidades de la provincia. El centro es impulsado y apoyado por la Fundación Valos y tiene su sede en el Centro de Integración Comunitaria de Agrelo, dependiente de la Municipalidad de Luján de Cuyo. The Trust for the Americas trabaja con 1,000 instituciones en 27 países, y coordina 360 centros de entrenamiento digital para que las comunidades en América Latina y el Caribe tengan una oportunidad de salir adelante, conseguir un trabajo, crear una micro empresa, o continuar sus estudios en la educación formal.
